John Ortega: Same Interview, The First Year

Taking inspiration from Vanity Fair's recurrent interviews with Billie Eilish, we're giving our authors the same questions once a year to see how their answers change.




John has been with SmashBear since the beginning. In fact, it was Storm's Child which inspired me to start SmashBear! John currently lives in Puerto Rico and continues to write amazing novels.


How many books have you written?

I have published 2 books (Storm's Child and Death's Edge) and written 4 including those.




What genres do you write in?

I specialize in writing Fantasy with a focus on Urban Fantasy


Where does your inspiration come from?

My inspiration comes from life. From a song on the radio that inspires your first-ever published works or a vacation you take.



How many followers do you have?

Depends on the social media! On Twitter I have 896, on Instagram 178, and Facebook 320.


What's your advice to future writer's?

Be kind to yourself, writing is a learning experience that never ends. You will stumble, you will fall but every scrape and bruise will make your writing better.


If you were to be a creature from one of your books, what would it be and why?

Hound of Awn because Sabine is the queen of the series and everyone knows it.




What are you reading at the moment?

Nalini Sigh Archangel's Light, Rachel Hobbs Soul Strung, Brittany Weisrock Equinox, Ilona Andrews Diamond Fire.



Has publishing changed your writing process?

Yes it has, it has made me a better more careful writer as I craft and weave my new storylines.
